What is Pure bioChar?

To put it simply Pure bioChar is charcoal that has been crushed to 12mm2 or less and added to the soil as an improver.

Biochar can be made from any organic material however ours is made from softwood thinnings from our sustainable management plan approved by the Forestry Commission England and we are licensed under the Grown in Britain scheme.

The bioChar is made in a large steel ring kiln in the same way as our top quality BBQ charcoal. This high quality charcoal is then crushed, graded, packaged and ready to be used as bioChar.

CCC’s Pure bioChar is a totally natural product with no artificial fertilizers added, it is very important to us that all our Pure bioChar is 100% grown and produced in our woodland so our customers can be guaranteed a product that is local and sustainable as well as good quality with clear traceability and provenance. It is also carbon negative!

Good for the Environment

As trees grow they absorb Co2 from the atmosphere. Converting wood into Pure bioChar and digging it into the soil locks it away as carbon. Under normal circumstances when wood rots or is burnt the carbon is released back into the atmosphere i.e. carbon neutral. Using Pure bioChar helps the environment by allowing carbon to be almost permanently removed from the atmosphere i.e. carbon negative. Biochar is extremely stable and will keep carbon locked away for many thousands of years.

The technique of using charcoal to improve soil is the ‘new old science!’ Pockets of very dark fertile soil called Terra Preta, meaning black earth, have been found in the Amazon, an area generally known for its infertile soils. Terra Preta is hundreds to thousands of years old and still retains its nutrients and carbon. It is believed indigenous Amazonians created it by incorporating charcoal into the soil at least 2500 years ago.

How does it work?

Biochar is charcoal, which is basically carbon. The carbon within biochar forms very strong bonds that do not rot or breakdown easily, making it extremely long lasting. Biochar particles have an extremely high surface area at the microscopic level and act like a sponge, being hydroscopic, soaking up many of the nutrients and moisture in the surrounding compost or soil, locking them away to be slowly released as the plants need them. Thus, preventing the nutrients from being leached out by watering or rainfall. The sponge like structure also provides homes to beneficial micro-organisms and fungi.

What is also great, because Pure bioChar doesn’t rot, its benefits do not diminish but accumulate!

Simple to Use

We have purposely made our pack sizes convenient to use. Simply add the corresponding pack to the correct size of compost bag or volume of your own compost that is stated on each pack. Mix. Leave for a week or so. And then use.

The control is in your hands to adjust the nutrients you want to add for your particular needs because we know all gardeners have their favourite recipe for growing success! Pure bioChar is the perfect gardener’s companion.

How to Use

IMPORTANT: Pure bioChar needs to be ‘charged’ before use

Best results are achieved when biochar is used at its optimum rate of 1:10. However, because Pure bioChar doesn’t rot or degrade you can add to it year on year until you have reached this level.

Courage Copse Creatives make two grades of Pure bioChar;

  • Standard grade – crushed and graded to less than 12mm2. To be used on a larger scale in the flowerbed or vegetable plot. Available in 5L bags.
  • High grade – crushed and graded to less than 5mm2. For houseplants, including orchids. Also great for potting compost. Available in 1L bags.

Both grades of Pure bioChar can be ‘charged’ the same way.

Simply ‘charge’ Pure bioChar with nutrients by adding it to compost, (your favorite brand or homemade) or manure.

  1. Half fill a large bucket or container with compost / manure.
  2. Add bioChar at the recommended ratio.
  3. Add enough water to dampen the compost.
  4. Mix well.
  5. Leave for 1 – 2 weeks stirring occasionally.

Alternatively you can soak Pure bioChar in a compost tea made from nettle, comfrey, worm casts, compost or any other nutrient rich material.

Or the Standard Pure bioChar could be added direct to the compost / manure heap. Left for a few weeks and then used as normal.

Application rates

  • Pure bioChar should be used as part of a soil improvement programme and is not a substitute for adding organic matter such as compost, manure etc.
  • Pure bioChar can be added to your soil safely, year on year, to increase its carbon content and therefore its benefits.
  • Pure bioChar (standard or high) added to compost or manure should be used in the normal way that you use your garden compost.
  • Pure bioChar ‘charged’ using a compost tea, should be added evenly to the topsoil throughout the top 30cms. Ensuring you add organic matter in the usual way.

Best results are achieved when the ratio is 1:10 Pure bioChar to soil / compost.

  • 5L Standard Pure bioChar is enough for a regular 50L bag of compost.
  • 1L High Grade Pure bioChar is enough for a 10L bag of potting compost.

Current guidance is to not exceed 3kg (5Ltr is approx 1kg) per metre squared per year. But research is on going and not conclusive at this stage.

How much to use?

Calculator Sheet

At Courage Copse Creatives we believe you should be out enjoying the outdoors and gardening rather than trying to work out how much Pure bioChar you need!
So we have tried to keep everything simple.

We sell our Pure bioChar by volume rather than by weight to make it easier for you to work out how much you need. We have also chosen specific sizes to again make it easy.

Current guidance is that biochar should be 10% of the total volume of the soil. However, there is on-going research into this area.

Using Pure bioChar to add to shop brought compost
Adding biochar to a 50 litre bag of compost you need to add just one 5 litre bag of our Standard Pure bioChar to reach the recommended 10% level.

Most compost for houseplants and orchids comes in 10 litre bags.
To reach the recommended 10% simply add one 1 litre bag of our High Pure bioChar.

For Larger projects . . .
A 1m2 veg bed at a depth of 20cm top soil = 200 litres
Therefore to achieve 10% you need to add 20 litre of biochar.

We sell our Standard Pure bioChar in 20 litre bags!
Work out the square metres of your veg plot and that is the number of 20 litre bags you need! Simple.

A 60ft x 20 ft poly tunnel needs 1,500 litres of biochar @ 10% levels
We sell our Standard Pure bioChar by 500 and 1,000 litre loads.

The great thing about biochar is that you don’t need to add it all in one go. Because biochar doesn’t degrade you can add it year on year until you reach the optimum 10% level. For example you have a large flower or veg bed or several smaller ones that add up to 20 m2. This means you need 20 x 20 litre bags of Standard Pure bioChar if you wanted to add it all in one go.
However you could split the application, and cost, over a number of years.
See table below

For a 20m2 bed
Below are outlined 5 different application programmes: 1, 2, 4, 5 and 10 year programmes.

At the end of each programme you will have achieved the recommended 10% levels of Pure bioChar in your soil. Simply choose the one that best suits your needs and pocket.
